Description

As the US grapples with how to develop sustainable legislation that optimizes health outcomes for all citizens, communities face additional challenges.  First, insurers are still largely paying for high-cost inpatient and emergency services with very little investment in population health.  Consequently, healthcare delivery systems often lack the basic primary care and community-based infrastructure to properly manage the health of their populations.  Through a series of stories from a frontier hospital in one of the most culturally diverse and medically underserved areas in the United States, Anderson describes barriers to equity in health care and offers practical, applicable tools toward effective and sustainable equity in health care delivery.

Objectives

1. Discuss the history and current status of some perverse incentives and conflicts of interest in health care delivery.
2. Articulate the financial barriers to health care access that lead to health inequalities.
3. Discuss tools for measuring health outcomes and costs.
4. Describe applicable tools for physician and administrative stewardship of health care resources.
